I think about Jackson Pollock, Wayne Thiebaud, and other modern artists. Derided as garbage or frivolous at the start of their most important periods. Now they’re revered for innovation. Thing is they were both trained technicians who were in touch with the symbolism of their art. But we live in a time when form masquerades as substance - not just in the products of popular culture.
