You state the case very well. I've been a contingent "faculty member" for 15 years. I have no expectation of ever being more. The great irony for me is that I teach a lot of doctoral students. I'm training the next generation of academics to work in the department that refuses to hire me permanently. In short, I am teaching the people who will replace the "real" faculty without myself being allowed that distinction.
